Arabic letters — FAQ

How many letters are in the Arabic alphabet?

There are 28 letters, written from right to left. Most letters connect to the next one and change shape depending on whether they sit at the start, middle or end of a word.

What is the easiest Arabic calligraphy style to learn?

Ruqaa is the easiest to start with: short strokes, simple shapes and a flat baseline. Naskh is the next step and is the most readable style for full sentences.

How do I practise Arabic calligraphy letters?

Work through the alphabet one letter at a time, comparing the same letter across the thirty-six styles below, and trace each shape slowly before joining letters into words.

Why do Arabic letters look different in each style?

Each calligraphic script has its own pen angle, proportion system and stroke rhythm. Kufic squares the curves, Diwani exaggerates them, and Naskh keeps them even and readable.

Can I download a letter as an image?

Yes. Open the generator, paste the letter you want and download it as a PNG or SVG at any size.
